Things to do

Stellenbosch is a University town located in the Winelands of the Western Cape, surrounded by vineyards and nature reserves. Cape Town with its rich cultural and historic heritage lies 50 km from Stellenbosch and is reachable by train or car. Please consult one of the several tourist websites that serve the area, such as Stellenbosch 360, for a complete listing of things to do. What follows now is a random selection of my favourites.

In Stellenbosch
  • Climb Stellenbosch Mountain via the Bergpad behind the Coetzenburg sports grounds in the early morning to catch a sunrise.
  • Cycle to the Jonkershoek nature reserve. Go mountain biking or hike and swim in at one of the waterfalls. The Ride In (rents bikes) or Postcard Cafe (wine tasting) are a great place to grab a bite en route.
  • Visit local winefarms. Beyerskloof home of South Africa's signature varietal Pinotage and Tokara with a delicious deli, local art and spectacular views will not disappoint.
Near Cape Town Further afield.
  • Experience the raw beauty of the Cederberg which displays exceptional botanical diversity, being part of the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa. It has excellent rock climbing, hiking, swimming and mountain biking opportunities. The area is remote and some places need 4x4 vehicles to access. Sandrif and surrounding farms offer accommodation, camping and info. It is approximately a 3 hour drive from Stellenbosch
  • Take a Safari. One of the closest game parks to Stellenbosch (2.5 hour drive) is Inverdoorn.
  • Drive the Garden Route before or after the conference.
