The student workshop will include a number of lectures and hands on activities that aim to familiarize participants with the various tools used in detecting gravitational waves from pulsar observations.

A detailed schedule will be posted closer to the workshop date. Topics covered could include:

  • Basic principles of pulsar timing.
  • Pulsar searches, discovery, confirmation and timing.
  • Introduction to gravitational wave (GW) science.
  • GW sources detectable by the PTA.
  • PTA science and challenges.
  • Familiarization with pulsar timing software such as TEMPO2/PINT.
  • Data analysis techniques for making a GW detection.
  • Sources of noise in PTA data sets.
  • Interstellar medium, dispersion and scattering effects, etc.

Most afternoons have a tutorial session where students work in teams or individually solving problems and presenting the results to the other members of the workshop.
